| Time series of temperatures from moored temperature loggers
for 1998,
1999, and 2000. Surface temperatures in 1998 and 1999 reached 17
ºC. However, the upper mixed layer was shallower in 1999.
Consequently,
internal waves were of larger amplitude in 1999 than 1998 and wavelet
analysis
of the temperature record indicates increased incidence of turbulence
in
the thermocline in 1999 than in 1998.
Reduced solar insolation led to reduced thermal stratification in 2000. Consequently, due to the smaller density gradient across the pycnocline, internal wave amplitudes were larger and energy dissipation rates, which indicate the intensity of turbulence, were an order of magnitude higher in the thermocline in 2000 than in 1999. |
