After looking at the data (see plot below -- data in plot is averaged into 1 db bins), we found that salinity calculations were much improved if we shift back by one scan the conductivity measurement in relation to the temperature measurement (yellow & purple dashed line), where not shifting is more 'noisy' (light green & purple line). This is probably due to a slight hysteresis of the temperature probe.
[We show two ways of shifting the data; shifting raw values → calculating salinity → binning (solid lines), versus shifting raw values → binning → then calculating salinity (dashed lines). Since there is very little difference between the two methods, the lines appear to overlay each other.]
