Raymond
Smith, Geography Professor since 1981 and former Director of ICESS, received
the
Nils
Jerlov Award
this year. The award is issued every two years
and is made
in recognition of contributions made to the advancement of knowledge of the
nature and consequences of light in the ocean. Ray is the second
recipient of the award; Professor André Morel
received the award in 2000.
Tommy Dickey, Professor of Geography, gave the
nominating speech
at the presentation ceremony, noting that Ray’s contributions “have extended
well beyond into studies of ecosystems, population dynamics, cetaceans, sea
ice, glaciology, and
climatology.....
