Fuel Maps
 

Chaparral fuels are mapped using a combination of remote sensing and stand age inputs. Below is an example of a fuels map of the Santa Monica Mountains. A 20-meter AVIRIS vegetation species map was "crosswalked" to standard Anderson fuel models to produce this map.

 

Fig 1) . Anderson fuel model map of the Santa Monica Mountains. Grasses are described as Model 1, hard chaparral as Model 4, and soft chaparral as Model 6. White areas are modeled as unburnable materials (exposed soil, roads, etc.) while black areas are not modeled.
